When There Is No Reliable Water Main, Bring the Water With You
Every emergency shower specification starts with the same assumption: that clean water at 0.2–0.6 MPa will be there the instant someone pulls the handle. On a large number of real industrial sites, that assumption does not hold. Remote pump stations, pipeline valve yards, mining sites, offshore modules, construction laydown areas, solar and battery farms, temporary plant shutdown zones — all of them may handle corrosives without a potable water main anywhere nearby, or with a main that loses pressure exactly when the process upset that caused the splash also knocked out utilities.
The DAAO6604-6 solves that with a 1500-litre integrated storage tank mounted above a fully enclosed stainless steel cubicle. It is an emergency shower that carries its own guaranteed flushing water. No mains connection is required for it to perform its duty cycle, and no loss of site pressure can disable it.
The 1500-Litre Duty Cycle Explained
Tank capacity is the single most important number on a self-contained safety shower, and it should be checked against ANSI Z358.1’s 15-minute flushing requirement rather than taken at face value.
At the certified flow rates of this unit — ≥ 75.7 L/min for the drench shower and ≥ 11.4 L/min for the eyewash — a full 15-minute shower consumes roughly 1,136 litres and a full 15-minute eye flush a further 171 litres. Running both simultaneously for the complete 15 minutes draws approximately 1,307 litres, comfortably inside the 1500 L reservoir with reserve remaining. The shower alone will run for close to 20 minutes.

That is the calculation an inspector or insurer will want to see, and it is why 1500 L is specified rather than a smaller, cheaper tank that only satisfies the standard on paper.

An Enclosure, Not Just a Fixture
The cubicle format changes how the unit performs in the field. Four stainless steel walls and sliding doors block wind, which is what destroys the spray pattern of an open pedestal shower outdoors — in a stiff breeze, an unenclosed drench shower can miss the casualty entirely. The enclosure also retains warmth, protects the plumbing from UV, dust and freezing wind chill, and gives a distressed worker privacy to remove contaminated clothing, which ANSI Z358.1 assumes will happen but which people are reluctant to do in the open on a busy site.
The whole shell is AISI 304 stainless steel with a 1.2 mm wall and 2.5–3 mm pipework; AISI 316L is available where chlorides, acid mist or marine air would attack 304 — coastal and offshore installations, chlor-alkali and fertiliser plants, pickling and plating lines.
Water leaves through an NPT 1-1/4″ drain outlet so contaminated effluent can be routed to a sump or containment tank rather than spreading across the ground, and the NPT 1-1/4″ inlet allows tanker top-up or connection to an intermittent supply.
Monitored, Alarmed and Ready
A tank-fed unit is only as good as the water inside it, so the DAAO6604-6 monitors that water continuously. Level and temperature monitoring are integrated as standard, so an empty or part-drained tank is never a surprise, and stored water that has drifted outside the tepid range ANSI defines (16–38 °C) is flagged before an emergency exposes the problem. Internal lighting is also standard, which matters at night and in an enclosure that is deliberately opaque.
Optional additions turn the unit into a supervised asset rather than a standalone box:
- Audible and visual alarm — a beacon and sounder that fire on activation, so colleagues know immediately that someone is inside and needs help.
- Remote signal interface — a dry contact or signal output to the control room, DCS or SCADA system, giving operators a real-time activation alert and continuous status.
- Automatic water filling — keeps the tank topped up from an intermittent or low-pressure supply.
- Anti-scald protection — thermostatic control that prevents the delivery of dangerously hot water after a tank has been sitting in direct sun.
Certified for Hazardous Areas
Because many sites without a water main are also classified areas, the DAAO6604-6 can be supplied in ATEX / IECEx configurations engineered to the project’s zone, gas group and temperature class. Lighting, alarms, heaters and instrumentation are then selected as certified equipment, with documentation packaged for the site’s hazardous-area dossier.
Siting and Maintenance
Position the enclosure within 10 seconds’ unobstructed travel of the hazard, on the same level and with a clear, well-lit path — the ANSI Z358.1 rule that governs all emergency flushing equipment. Its 1200 × 1200 mm footprint needs a level, load-rated pad, and the 3950 mm overall height should be checked against overhead pipe racks and crane paths.
Maintenance is straightforward: activate weekly to confirm flow and exercise the valves, inspect the tank annually, and review the stored water quality on the interval your site’s water treatment policy dictates.
