ABS-coated combination drench shower and eyewash for outdoor process areas

A bare stainless combination unit rust-stains in a coastal yard and disappears against grey steelwork. DAAO6613 is a compound emergency shower and eye wash station with an ABS coating over a 304 stainless (316L optional) pedestal so the riser stays high-visibility yellow and the wet parts stay chemically tight. Height is 2410 mm. The drench rose and the eyewash bowl are both 10 inch / 26 cm. Published flows meet the ANSI and EN floors: shower ≥ 75.7 L/min, eyewash ≥ 11.4 L/min. Pipe wall is 2.5–3 mm. Inlet and drain are NPT 1-1/4. Working pressure is 0.2–0.6 MPa. The unit is listed to ANSI Z358.1-2014 and EN 15154-1/2:2006 and is tagged for outdoor, cold-climate, and hazardous-area plots when the water and electrical packages match the site.

Why specify ABS coating on a 304 or 316L combination unit

The coating is not decoration. ABS over stainless gives a continuous, wipe-clean film that stands up to dilute acids, alkalis, and UV better than thin paint, and it keeps the OSHA-style safety yellow readable from the process aisle. Under the film the structure is still stainless: 304 as standard, 316L when the pipe spec or a chloride atmosphere demands it. Pipe wall 2.5–3 mm is heavier than indoor light-gauge tube, so the 2410 mm riser takes outdoor knocks, hose-down, and weekly valve cycles without ovalising at the pull rod.

An emergency eyewash and shower station is first aid after a splash. The combination layout means the casualty does not have to choose which unit to run to. Pull the overhead rod for a full-body flush from the 10 inch / 26 cm rose; push the eyewash paddle for a two-stream pattern in the 10 inch / 26 cm bowl. Both valves must stay open hands-free so the user can remove clothing. That is the point of a compound station on a loading rack, battery room, or drum store.

Flows, pressure, and the 10-inch geometry

ANSI/ISEA Z358.1-2014 requires a drench shower to deliver at least 75.7 L/min (20 gpm) for 15 minutes at a non-injurious velocity, and an eye/face wash at least 11.4 L/min (3.0 gpm) to both eyes. EN 15154-1 covers the body shower and EN 15154-2 the eye unit; DAAO6613 is specified to both 2006 parts as well as Z358.1-2014. The 10 inch rose spreads that 75.7 L/min across the shoulders instead of a needle jet. The 10 inch bowl keeps the twin aerators on the face and catches overspray so the pad does not ice or slime as fast. Stay inside 0.2–0.6 MPa. Below 0.2 MPa the pattern collapses; above 0.6 MPa fit a regulator. Inlet NPT 1-1/4 matches most combination headers. Drain NPT 1-1/4 must go to a chemical sewer or neutralization sump, not storm water — a 15-minute flush is more than a tonne of contaminated water if shower and eyewash run together.

Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) is the coating and is also the usual material for aerator housings and dust caps on this class of unit. It does not replace stainless in the pressure boundary. If the client forbids plastics in the splash zone, say so on the inquiry and we will quote stainless heads and bowl on the same 2410 mm riser.

Temperature tag versus “cold climates”

The working-environment line is 10 °C to 35 °C. That is an unheated, untraced combination unit. The “suitable for cold climates” badge means the ABS-coated stainless build can sit outdoors in a cool season; it does not mean the water will flow at −15 °C. For frost, add heat tracing, insulation, or a cable heated system, and design for tepid water if the standard requires it. Heat tracing prevents ice. It is not a substitute for a mixing valve if the specification calls for 16–38 °C flushing fluid.

Where this combination station belongs on the plot

Bolt the base plate to a level, drained plinth within a 10-second travel of the splash hazard — the distance ANSI discusses as about 16.8 m (55 ft) on a clear path, closer for strong corrosives. Do not put a curb, a locked gate, or a parked forklift in that path. Keep the yellow ABS-coated riser and the green/yellow eyewash sign visible from the aisle. Activate both the shower pull and the eyewash weekly; look for a full 10-inch pattern, a stay-open valve, and a clear drain. After a chemical event, wash the coating and check that the aerator filters are not packed with solids.

Hazardous-area suitability on a non-electrical combination unit is about siting and any add-ons. The coated stainless pedestal has no motor. If you add a flow switch, beacon, or heat-trace circuit, those extras must match the area classification. Do not drill the column for a random junction box and call the assembly Ex-rated.

Questions buyers ask before the PO

What does “compound” or “combination” mean?

One station, two functions: overhead body shower and bowl eyewash. The casualty can run both. It is not an enclosed room and not an eyewash-only pedestal.

304 with ABS, or 316L?

304 + ABS coating is the standard outdoor high-visibility build. Choose 316L under the same coating when the client’s pipe spec is 316L or the atmosphere is chloride-rich. The coating does not replace the alloy in the pressure boundary.

Will it freeze outdoors?

Not protected as shipped. The 10–35 °C line is unheated. Order tracing or a heated enclosure if the site goes below that band.

Why 10 inch on both the rose and the bowl?

A 26 cm rose gives a wider drench at ≥ 75.7 L/min. A 26 cm bowl keeps the 11.4 L/min eye streams on the face and limits splash onto the pad. Both dimensions are the usual industrial combination size, not a laboratory faucet.

Can we change color or height?

Yellow ABS is the default for recognition. Other coating colors and minor dimension changes are quote items. Do not shorten the 2410 mm riser so far that the rose no longer sits above the standing user as the standard intends.
