DAAO6620-DF is a cable-heated combination eyewash and safety shower built for those two constraints at once. Why heat tracing belongs on the combination unit

ANSI/ISEA Z358.1-2014 and EN 15154-1/2:2006 both assume the flushing fluid will actually leave the nozzle when a casualty arrives. In a cold climate that fails in two ways: standing water in the bowl and riser freezes, and the stay-open valve seizes. Cable heat tracing on the pipe, wrapped under insulation and terminated in a sealed box, keeps the water above freezing so a weekly test still delivers a full pattern. DAAO6620-DF draws 140 W from a 220 V supply — a small continuous load compared with a space-heated booth, which is why cable-heated pedestals are the usual choice when you need a combination unit in the open, not a 1500 kg enclosure.

An emergency eyewash and shower station must put flushing fluid on both eyes (and the face, on an eye/face wash) and on the body within seconds, then run for 15 minutes hands-free. This unit’s published eye/face range of 12–18 L/min sits above the 11.4 L/min (3.0 gpm) eye/face minimum in Z358.1. Stay inside 0.2–0.8 MPa so the aerators are effective and not injurious. Yellow dust covers on the twin heads keep grit out of the nozzles and pop off when the water starts. The 1010 mm bowl height matches the reach zone most combination pedestals use so a standing adult can get both eyes into the stream without kneeling on ice.

Ex d IIC, BT ratings, and IP65

The data sheet lists Ex d IIC T4, Ex d IIC T6, BT4, and BT6. In IEC / GB language, Ex d is a flameproof enclosure: an internal ignition is contained so it cannot ignite the atmosphere around the box. IIC is the most onerous gas group (hydrogen / acetylene class). T4 limits surface temperature to 135 °C; T6 to 85 °C. Pick T6 when the gas list includes carbon disulphide or when the client’s schedule already says T6. BT4 / BT6 are the older Chinese class-B markings still written on many domestic hazardous-area specs; order the marking that matches the area classification drawing, do not mix them on one tag. IP65 means dust-tight and protected against water jets — the right minimum for an outdoor pedestal that will be hosed down after a spill. It is not a submersible rating. Mount the 140 W box above standing water, keep the lid gasket intact, and do not drill extra holes in the flameproof enclosure. Hazardous-area suitability is only true when the heater circuit, isolator, and any booster or sewage pump options are the same Ex family as the nameplate.

304, 316, ABS, and 2.5 mm pipe

Standard wet parts are 304 stainless; 316 is the upgrade for chloride, coastal, and bleach service. The green coated column is the usual high-visibility safety finish; color is an option. Shower head and bowl can be ABS (light, chemical-smooth, no rust at the aerators) or stainless (when the client forbids plastic in the splash zone). Pipe wall 2.5 mm is heavier than light-gauge indoor tube and takes outdoor knocks and repeated valve cycles. Options on the same platform include dimension changes, an inlet booster pump when the header is below 0.2 MPa, a sewage / sump pump when the pad has no gravity drain, and alternate Ex or IP packages.

How to install and keep the trace live

Set the pedestal on a level, drained plinth within a 10-second travel of the splash hazard. Feed the unit inside 0.2–0.8 MPa; add the optional booster if the yard main is weak. Pipe the waste to a chemical drain, not storm water. Isolate, gland, and earth the 220 V heat-trace circuit to the same Ex method as the box. Put the isolator where operations can see that the trace is energized at the start of every cold shift. Activate the eyewash weekly as ANSI expects, and after each test confirm the yellow covers are back on and the cable is not damaged. A freeze-protected unit that has been left isolated is only a green pipe.

Tepid water is still a separate design choice. Heat tracing prevents ice; it does not by itself hold 16–38 °C flushing fluid. If the specification calls for tepid water, add a mixing valve or a tempered water system upstream. Do not turn the 140 W cable into a water heater — it is sized to offset heat loss, not to raise a cold main to tepid.

Questions buyers ask before they order

Is this only an eyewash, or a full combination shower?

The catalog class is a heat-traced combination eyewash and safety shower. The published flow on this page is the eye/face wash, 12–18 L/min, at 1010 mm bowl height. If your data sheet must also show a 75.7 L/min drench rose, state that on the inquiry so the overhead arm and valve are included and tested on the same skid.

T4 or T6? Ex d or BT?

Follow the area classification, not the cheapest box. T6 is the colder surface limit. BT4/BT6 are for specs written to older Chinese markings. We will stamp one family on the nameplate — tell us which drawing governs.

Will 140 W keep it open at −30 °C?

140 W on 220 V is the standard cable load for this pedestal. Extreme cold, long uninsulated runs, or a shaded north wall may need more trace or thicker insulation. Give us the winter dry-bulb and wind line and we will confirm or upsize.

304 or 316? ABS or stainless bowl?

304 and ABS cover most inland plants. Use 316 and a stainless bowl where chlorides, bleach, or a no-plastic rule apply.

What if our inlet is below 0.2 MPa or we have no drain?

Order the inlet booster pump and/or the sewage pump options. Do not expect the 12–18 L/min pattern if the header is below the rated band.
